Common WCED applications

  • EV charger consumer units — WCED RCBOs, 4-pole RCDs and MCBs are regularly used in dedicated EV charging consumer units. The time-delay RCD is particularly useful where nuisance tripping from EV charging inrush is an issue.
  • Heat pump electrical protection — For heat pump supply circuits requiring Type A or pulsating DC-sensitive RCBO protection in line with BS 7671 Regulation 722, WCED 4-pole RCBOs are a well-priced option.
  • 3-phase distribution boards — WCED's range of 4-pole MCBs, isolators and RCDs makes them a practical fit for TPN distribution boards in commercial EV charging, industrial sub-boards and larger residential projects.
  • Solar PV installations — WCED modular contactors are used for load management in solar PV systems, and the 1000V DC combiner boxes are ready for string array connection.
  • Weatherproof outdoor consumer units — The WCED IP65 plastic enclosures are specified for external installations where the distribution gear needs to be protected from the elements.

FAQ — WCED products

What does WCED stand for?

WCED stands for Whitecliffe. It is the manufacturer's brand name used for the full range of DIN-rail electrical protection and switching products supplied through EcoHarmony and other UK electrical distributors.

Are WCED products suitable for EV charger installations?

Yes. WCED RCBOs and time-delay RCDs are widely used in EV charging consumer units. The WCED 4-pole RCBO is a popular choice for providing Type A pulsating DC-sensitive protection on EV charger supply circuits, as required by BS 7671 Amendment 2 (Regulation 722.531.3). The time-delay RCD variants help prevent nuisance tripping caused by EV charger inrush current.

What is the difference between WCED RCDs and RCBOs?

A WCED RCD provides residual current protection only — it needs to be paired with an MCB for overcurrent protection. A WCED RCBO combines both functions into a single DIN-rail module, providing both overcurrent and residual current protection in one device. For dedicated EV or heat pump circuits, an RCBO is typically the neater solution, while an RCD may be preferred as a main protection device feeding multiple MCBs.

Do WCED products come with datasheets and technical documentation?

Yes. EcoHarmony provides full WCED product datasheets, wiring diagrams and dimensional drawings through the dedicated WCED technical information page. These are available without account registration.

What's the breaking capacity of WCED MCBs?

WCED C-curve MCBs are rated at 10kA breaking capacity, which is suitable for the majority of UK domestic and light commercial installations. They are available in 1-pole, 2-pole and 4-pole configurations from 32A to 100A.

Can I order individual WCED components or only complete boards?

EcoHarmony stocks individual WCED components — RCDs, RCBOs, MCBs, isolators and contactors — so you can order exactly what you need for your installation. Full boards and enclosures are also available where required.
