The WCED WTPN 125A TPN Distribution Board is a three-phase and neutral (TPN) distribution board for commercial, industrial, and domestic three-phase installations. Unlike most boards in this class, it includes a 125A 4-pole main switch and Type 2 surge protection device (SPD) as standard — both fitted and ready to connect, with no additional components to source or install.

Available in 4 to 24 way configurations. Each way accommodates a three-phase device (MCB, RCBO, or RCD), and single-phase devices can be fitted using standard single-pole modules — giving each three-phase way the equivalent of three single-phase ways.

SPD included as standard — and it doesn't use a way. The MCB for the surge protection device is positioned next to the 125A main switch, outside the usable way count. This means every way on the board is available for circuit protection devices — unlike some competing boards where the SPD takes up one or more usable ways.

What's included

  • 125A 4-pole main incomer switch
  • Type 2 surge protection device (SPD) with dedicated MCB — positioned outside usable ways
  • 1.2mm steel enclosure, epoxy powder coated to RAL7035
  • Fully enclosed busbar system with complete shrouding
  • Neutral and earth terminals fitted on both sides
  • Removable gland plate for flexible cable entry
  • Keyhole fixing system for wall mounting
Circuit protection devices are not included. MCBs, RCBOs, and RCDs are sold separately. The board accepts 6kA devices without modifications. See our WCED range for compatible devices including the Type B RCDs and RCBOs for TPD boards.

Typical applications

  • Commercial EV charging installations — multi-bay charge point distribution, car park power infrastructure, fleet depot supply boards
  • Commercial and industrial distribution — office buildings, retail units, workshops, light industrial units
  • Multi-unit residential — apartment blocks and HMOs with three-phase supply
  • Submain distribution — secondary distribution boards fed from a main LV switchboard
  • Plant rooms and equipment rooms — three-phase distribution for HVAC, pumps, and motor loads

How to choose the right way count

Count the number of three-phase circuits you need to protect — each three-phase load (motor, three-phase EV charger, three-phase HVAC unit) uses one three-phase way. Single-phase loads use one single-pole module per circuit, and three single-pole modules fit into one three-phase way. Allow headroom for future circuits — it is significantly easier and cheaper to install a larger board initially than to replace it later.

As a guide for EV charging installations: a typical 8-way board supports up to 8 × 22kW three-phase charger circuits, or up to 24 × 7kW single-phase charger circuits, subject to supply capacity and load management.

Frequently asked questions

What does TPN mean?
TPN stands for Three Phase and Neutral. A TPN distribution board distributes power across three phases and neutral, as opposed to a single-phase board which uses one phase and neutral only. TPN boards are required wherever three-phase equipment is installed or where the supply is three-phase. Most commercial and industrial properties, and an increasing number of larger domestic properties, have a three-phase supply.
Does the SPD take up a usable way?
No. The MCB for the surge protection device is mounted next to the 125A main switch, in a dedicated position outside the usable way count. Every way shown in the variant description is available for circuit protection devices. This is a key advantage of the WCED WTPN range over some competing boards where the SPD occupies one or more circuit ways.
What circuit protection devices are compatible?
The board accepts standard 6kA DIN rail devices without modification — including MCBs, Type A and Type B RCBOs, and RCDs. For three-phase circuits, 4-pole devices are used. For single-phase circuits, standard single-pole or 2-pole devices are used with up to three per three-phase way. See our WCED range for compatible devices.
Is this board suitable for EV charger installations?
Yes. The WCED WTPN board is well suited to commercial EV charging installations where multiple three-phase chargers need to be fed from a single distribution point. The integrated SPD satisfies the surge protection requirement of BS 7671 Amendment 2:2022 for the distribution board. Individual charger circuits still require their own overcurrent protection (MCB or RCBO) and, where applicable, PME protection. See our 3-phase PME protection unit for PEN fault detection on three-phase EV charger circuits.
Is this board IP40 rated — can it be used outdoors?
No. IP40 means the enclosure is protected against solid objects larger than 1mm but has no water ingress rating. It is suitable for indoor installations only — plant rooms, equipment rooms, garages, and other protected indoor locations. For outdoor or exposed installations, an IP65-rated weatherproof enclosure is required. See our IP65 weatherproof boards.
What standard does this board comply with?
The WCED WTPN range complies with BS EN 61439-3 and is 18th Edition (BS 7671:2018 Amendment 2:2022) compliant.
