Stage 1 — Gather information

1What exactly is happening?

Pick the category that matches: no lights at all, lights on but won't start, starts then trips or stops, or a clicking/buzzing noise. These lead to genuinely different causes.

Why this matters: "won't charge" covers several unrelated fault types — a dead charger and a charger that won't recognise the car have completely different causes, even though they look similar to a driver.
2What's changed recently?

New car, new cable, a power cut, or a change to your home wifi/router. Note anything, even if it seems unrelated.

Why this matters: a huge number of "sudden" faults are actually caused by something that changed just before — a router reset breaking the charger's connection, or a new car having a different default charging schedule.
3Note the timing and any colours/lights

If it trips, roughly how long after starting? If it won't start, does the light change colour at all when you plug in, even briefly? If there's a message on the app, what does it actually say?

Why this matters: trip timing in particular is one of the most useful diagnostic signals there is — a trip within a minute and a trip after 30 minutes point to completely different causes, covered in Stage 3.

Stage 2 — Basic troubleshooting

These checks are safe for anyone to carry out — no tools, no opening anything up, just observation and using the switches as they're designed to be used.

1Check the consumer unit switch position

Look at the switch for your charger circuit — does it sit in a different position to the others (often somewhere in the middle rather than fully up)?

Why this matters: this instantly tells you whether a breaker has tripped, without needing to interpret anything else first.
2Reset it firmly

Turn it fully off, then fully back on with a firm motion. It should click into place and hold.

Why this matters: a switch that holds firm suggests a normal, resettable trip. One that springs back or feels loose/sticky is a strong sign the device itself has failed (see Stage 4).
3Press the yellow test button

Most RCBOs have a small test button, usually yellow, marked "T". Press it — it should trip the device instantly.

Why this matters: this proves whether the RCBO's actual safety mechanism is functioning, independently of whatever else is going on with the charger.
4Check the rotary isolator switch

If there's a separate isolator near the charger, confirm the handle points straight down (the normal "on" position).

Why this matters: this is a completely separate switch from the consumer unit, and it's easy to check the breaker, find it fine, and forget the isolator exists at all.
5Check the cable is fully seated

Look for the cable sticking out very slightly (1-2mm) rather than sitting flush. If so, power cycle the charger and push it firmly in again right after.

Why this matters: on motor-locking sockets, the lock can occasionally engage just before the plug is fully seated — it looks connected but isn't making a solid connection.
6Check tethered cable pins for corrosion

On a tethered cable, look at the top two pins in the vehicle-end connector for blue/green residue. Turn the charger off first, then clean gently with a soft toothbrush if found.

Why this matters: these top two pins carry the low-voltage signal between car and charger, not the main power — they're exposed to weather on tethered units and corrosion here blocks communication even though the plug looks fine.
7Check the car's own schedule and smart tariff settings

Check the vehicle's own settings, not just the charger's app, for any charging schedule or smart tariff (like Octopus Intelligent) that could be restricting when it charges.

Why this matters: this is the single most common cause of a charger that "won't start" despite nothing actually being broken — and conflicting schedules set in both the car and the charger is a frequent trap.
8Strip it back: load balancing → cable → car

If schedules aren't the cause, temporarily disable load balancing in the app and retry. Still nothing? Try a different cable if you can. Still nothing? Try a different vehicle if you can.

Why this matters: this makes the charger "dumb" and adds complexity back in one piece at a time — whichever change fixes it tells you exactly where the fault actually is, rather than guessing.
If everything looks correctly scheduled but it still won't charge, a poor internet connection at the charger can also be the cause — try connecting it to a mobile hotspot temporarily to rule that out.

App connectivity or firmware issues unrelated to any electrical fault → manufacturer support
