WCED 4 Pole Rotary Isolator Switches

Compact 4 pole rotary isolators from the WCED WRS range, from 20A up to 125A for AC, plus 1000V DC versions for solar PV. A straightforward, positive-action way to isolate EV chargers, machinery, sub-boards and PV strings.

Trade-friendly pricing. Technical support available from the WCED team.

Why choose the WCED WRS range

4 pole switching
Breaks all three phases and neutral together for three-phase circuits.
20A to 125A AC
Seven AC ratings so you can match the isolator to the circuit rather than over-spec.
1000V DC options
32A and 40A DC versions for the DC side of solar PV systems.
Built to a recognised standard
The WRS series is specified to IEC / EN 60947-3 for switch-disconnectors.

AC rotary isolators

Part code Rating Poles Type
WRS4P20 20A 4 AC rotary isolator
WRS4P32 32A 4 AC rotary isolator
WRS4P40 40A 4 AC rotary isolator
WRS4P63 63A 4 AC rotary isolator
WRS4P80 80A 4 AC rotary isolator
WRS4P100 100A 4 AC rotary isolator
WRS4P125 125A 4 AC rotary isolator

DC rotary isolators for solar PV

Part code Rating Voltage Poles
WRS4P32DC 32A 1000V DC 4
WRS4P40DC 40A 1000V DC 4

Choosing the right rating

Pick an isolator rated at or above the maximum current of the circuit it isolates. These are typical starting points:

Application Typical current Suggested part
Single-phase 7kW EV charger 32A WRS4P32 or WRS4P40
Three-phase 22kW EV charger 32A per phase WRS4P32 or WRS4P40
Small sub-board or garage supply 40A to 63A WRS4P40, WRS4P63
Larger sub-board or plant 80A to 125A WRS4P80, WRS4P100, WRS4P125
Solar PV AC side (inverter output) Match inverter output AC range, rated at or above inverter current
Solar PV DC side (strings) Up to 32A or 40A, 1000V DC WRS4P32DC, WRS4P40DC

These are guide figures only. Always size the isolator from the actual design current and the manufacturer data sheet.

Isolator, circuit breaker or main switch?

Device What it does Protects against overload or short circuit?
Rotary isolator Manually disconnects a circuit so work can be done safely No
MCB / RCBO Disconnects automatically on a fault, and can be switched off by hand Yes
Main switch Isolates the whole installation at the incoming supply No

An isolator is normally installed alongside a protective device, not instead of one. Eco Harmony also stocks WCED RCBOs, surge protection and PME fault detection units for the same installations.

Where they are used

EV charging
Local isolation next to a wallbox or on a multi-charger supply.
Solar PV
AC isolation at the inverter, and DC isolation on the string side.
Machinery and plant
Lock-off style isolation for maintenance.
Sub-boards
Incoming isolation on a sub-distribution board.

Frequently asked questions

What is a rotary isolator used for?
A rotary isolator is a manually operated switch that disconnects a circuit from its supply so the equipment downstream can be worked on safely. Common uses are EV charger isolation, solar PV AC and DC isolation, machinery, sub-boards and plant.
Why do these have 4 poles?
A 4 pole isolator switches all three phases and the neutral together, which is what you want on a three-phase supply with a neutral. On a single-phase circuit it can still be used by wiring the poles in series or in pairs, depending on the installation.
What is the difference between the AC and DC versions?
DC current does not pass through zero like AC does, so an arc is harder to extinguish. The DC isolators (WRS4P32DC and WRS4P40DC) are built and rated for 1000V DC and are the ones to use on the DC side of a solar PV installation. Do not use an AC-rated isolator on a DC circuit.
Which amp rating should I choose?
Pick a rating equal to or above the maximum load of the circuit it isolates. For a typical single EV charger, the 32A or 40A model is the usual fit. For board-level isolation, look at the 63A to 125A models.
Is this a replacement for a circuit breaker?
No. An isolator disconnects, but it does not protect against overload or short circuit. It is installed alongside protective devices such as an MCB, RCBO or MCCB.
Can I use an isolator outdoors?
That depends on the enclosure and its IP rating. Check the WCED data sheet for the model you choose, and fit it in a suitable weatherproof enclosure if it is going outside.
Do I need an isolator for an EV charger?
Every circuit needs a means of isolation, and many installers add a local isolator next to the charger so it can be switched off for servicing. Your electrician will confirm what the installation requires.
Who should install it?
Installation should be carried out by a competent electrician in line with BS 7671 and the manufacturer instructions.
