Before you fit one

A changeover switch only selects between supplies. It does not protect the circuit, so it sits alongside the usual protective devices. Whether the neutral needs to be switched depends on the supplies and the earthing arrangement, so confirm the wiring design with your electrician before ordering. Frequently asked questions

What does a changeover switch do?
A manual changeover switch lets you select between two supplies, for example mains and a generator, and prevents both being connected to the load at the same time. You turn the handle to choose the feed.
What is the difference between a changeover switch and an isolator?
An isolator simply opens and closes one circuit. A changeover switch selects one of two sources for a load, with an off position in between on most models. They are not interchangeable.
Can I use one to connect a generator to my home?
A changeover switch is the usual way to keep a generator and the mains from feeding the same circuit, but the installation as a whole still has to comply with BS 7671, including earthing arrangements and any notification to the network operator. Use a competent electrician.
What do WCOS125, WMECOS125 and WMECOS125-L include?
WCOS125 is the 125A 2NO 2NC switch on its own. WMECOS125 is the same switch fitted in a 4 module mini enclosure. WMECOS125-L is the same switch in a 4 module metal enclosure.
What does IP66 mean on the WCOS3P range?
IP66 is a high level of protection against dust and powerful water jets, so the 3 pole WCOS3P units are suited to outdoor or damp locations such as an external wall or garage.
Do I need a 3 pole or a 4 pole changeover switch?
It depends on whether the neutral has to be switched, which is set by the supplies and the earthing arrangement. Ask your electrician to confirm before you order.
Which rating should I choose?
Choose a rating equal to or above the maximum load on the circuit. For smaller circuits such as a shed, garage or EV supply, the 20A to 63A 3 pole units are the usual choice. The 125A units suit whole-property changeover.
