These standalone DC surge protection modules are Type 2 SPDs designed for the DC side of EV charging, solar PV, and other DC electrical systems. Available in 2-pole and 4-pole configurations, they mount on a standard 35 mm DIN rail and can be added to an existing enclosure wherever DC-side surge protection is needed — without requiring a complete pre-fitted board.

DC surge protection is different from AC surge protection. Standard AC surge protection devices are not suitable for use on DC circuits. These modules are specifically designed and rated for DC systems up to 1000 V, making them suitable for EV charging infrastructure and solar PV installations.

What is DC surge protection and why is it different from AC surge protection?
AC surge protection devices are designed to work with alternating current, which has a natural zero-crossing point that helps extinguish the arc when the device operates. DC circuits have no zero-crossing, meaning the arc is much harder to extinguish — DC-specific SPDs use active arc suppression mechanisms designed for this. Using an AC SPD on a DC circuit is unsafe and ineffective.
Do I need DC surge protection as well as AC surge protection for an EV charger?
For AC EV chargers (Types 1 and 2 — 7 kW, 11 kW, 22 kW), AC surge protection is typically all that is required on the incoming supply. DC surge protection modules are primarily used where there is a DC generation or storage system (solar PV, battery) connected to the installation, or for DC rapid chargers where the DC output circuit requires independent SPD protection.
What is the difference between 2-pole and 4-pole DC SPD modules?
A 2-pole module protects a two-conductor DC circuit (positive and negative). A 4-pole module provides protection across four conductors and is used in systems with a mid-point reference or where additional protection is required across multiple DC lines — common in larger solar PV or battery storage systems.
When would I use a standalone module rather than a pre-fitted board?
Standalone modules are used when you need to add surge protection to an existing enclosure rather than installing a complete pre-fitted board. They are also useful where the installer wants to specify their own enclosure, or where the DC SPD is just one component within a larger custom distribution assembly.
