This 3-phase PME protection unit provides PEN fault detection, RCBO protection, and Type 2 surge protection in a single pre-wired enclosure for EV chargers on PME (TN-C-S) supplies. It is designed for 11 kW and 22 kW three-phase EV charger installations where a compact, compliant protection board is needed without the cost or disruption of installing an earth rod.

Designed for 3-phase EV charger installs on PME supplies. This unit satisfies the requirement of BS 7671:2018 Amendment 2, Regulation 722.411.4.1 by providing automatic disconnection of the EV charger in the event of a PEN fault on the incoming supply — without the need for a separate earth electrode.
Do I need this? If you are installing a 3-phase EV charger (11 kW or 22 kW) on a PME supply and the charger does not have built-in PEN fault detection, this unit is required under UK wiring regulations. It also applies where an earth rod is not practicable or the ground resistance cannot be achieved at 15 Ω or below.

What's included

  • PEN fault detection module — monitors all three phases for open neutral conditions
  • 40 A RCBO (Type A) — combined residual current and overcurrent protection
  • Type 2 surge protection device — protects charger electronics from transient overvoltages
  • IP40 metal enclosure, pre-wired and DIN rail mounted

Who this is for

  • Electricians installing 11 kW or 22 kW EV chargers on 3-phase PME supplies

  • Installers who need a pre-wired, ready-to-connect 3-phase board to reduce install time

Frequently asked questions

What RCBO rating do I need for a 3-phase EV charger?
A 40 A Type A RCBO is appropriate for most 11 kW and 22 kW three-phase EV chargers. The 40 A rating accommodates the continuous load at 22 kW (approximately 32 A per phase), and Type A is suitable for AC charging circuits where DC components may be present. If the charger already includes its own RCBO, an MCB-only variant may be sufficient — see our RCBO/MCB IP65 version.
Does this unit remove the need for an earth rod?
Yes. BS 7671 Amendment 2 permits a PEN fault detection device as a compliant alternative to a TT earthing system with an earth rod. This unit monitors the three-phase supply and disconnects within 5 seconds if a fault condition is detected, satisfying Regulation 722.411.4.1.
What is the difference between IP40 and IP65 enclosures?
IP40 provides protection against solid objects larger than 1 mm but offers no specific water ingress protection. It is suitable for indoor locations such as garages, utility rooms, or plant rooms. IP65 is fully dustproof and protected against low-pressure water jets — required for any external or exposed outdoor mounting. For outdoor installations, see our IP65 version.
Is Type 2 surge protection required under BS 7671?
BS 7671 Amendment 2 requires a risk assessment for surge protection on EV charger circuits. In practice, almost all UK installers include Type 2 surge protection as standard, as the risk assessment routinely concludes it is needed — especially for chargers exposed to switching transients from the grid or nearby lightning activity.
Can this be used for a commercial EV charger install?
Yes. This unit is used on both domestic and commercial 3-phase EV charger installations. For multi-charger commercial setups, you may need a 3-phase distribution board with multiple circuits — see our 3-phase distribution board range.
