This IP65 weatherproof 3-phase consumer unit is a pre-fitted, ready-to-wire board designed for outdoor EV charger installations on three-phase supplies. Available with either an RCBO or MCB depending on whether the charger includes its own residual current protection, it also includes Type 2 surge protection as standard. The IP65-rated enclosure makes it suitable for external wall mounting in exposed locations.

IP65 rated — suitable for outdoor mounting. Where a consumer unit or distribution board is mounted externally or in an exposed location, an IP65 rating is required. This unit meets that requirement and is designed for outdoor 3-phase EV charger installs including driveway, car park, and commercial forecourt locations.
RCBO or MCB? If your EV charger already includes its own RCBO (many modern chargers do), you can use the MCB option in this unit — it provides overcurrent protection without duplicating RCD protection. If the charger does not include an RCBO, choose the RCBO variant to meet BS 7671 requirements.

  • RCBO (Type A) or MCB — select the appropriate variant for your installation

Frequently asked questions

What IP rating do I need for an outdoor EV charger board?
For any externally mounted consumer unit or distribution board — including installs on outside walls, under canopies, or in exposed locations — IP65 or above is required. IP65 means the enclosure is dust-tight and protected against water jets from any direction. For indoor installations (garages, utility rooms), IP40 is generally acceptable.
Should I choose the RCBO or MCB variant?
If your EV charger includes its own built-in RCBO or RDC-DD, you can use the MCB variant in this board. This avoids duplicating RCD protection, which can cause nuisance tripping. If the charger does not include residual current protection, use the RCBO variant — it provides both RCD and overcurrent protection in a single device, as required by BS 7671.
Does this unit include PEN fault detection?
No. This unit provides RCBO/MCB protection and surge protection, but does not include PEN fault detection. If your installation is on a PME (TN-C-S) supply, you will also need a separate PEN fault detection device or a TT earthing system. See our 3-phase PEN fault detection unit for the complete solution.
Can this be wall-mounted externally?
Yes. The IP65-rated enclosure is designed for external wall mounting. Ensure the cable entry points are sealed correctly and that the mounting height complies with BS 7671 accessibility requirements for the installation type.
Is Type 2 surge protection sufficient for EV charger installations?
Yes. Type 2 SPDs are the standard protection level for EV charger circuits and are designed to limit transient overvoltages downstream of the main distribution board. Type 1 SPDs are used at the service entrance where there is a risk of direct lightning strike to overhead conductors — most UK installations require Type 2 only.
